Oppo I need a good obscure movie to watch. Feel like seeing something different. Doesn’t necessarily have to be in English as long as I can get subtitles for it. Here are my suggestions for the fam just in case you haven’t seen them.
Trollhunter
District B-13

If you want something inspirational, The Way is very good. Directed by the Mighty Duck Man himself.

If you’re young enough you may never have seen “Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” which is frankly one of the best movies ever made.

I’m 25 but saw that movie at least 8 years ago. My old man made us watch it. Thought it was going to be lame but maaaaan is it great. As a matter of fact I have it on DVD.

I’ve been on a Hong Kong Second Wave kick recently so I recommend Days of Being Wild if you have Netflix. For something a little less melancholy, I would say the Trailer Park Boys or Inbetweeners movies, which I thought were laugh out loud funny. For a cyberpunk thriller: Strange Days starring Ralph Fiennes.

I’ll put it on my “To Watch” list. Read reviews on it and it sounds nice. Tonight looking for something more on the lines of action, suspense, or a little horror.

Beneath Hill 60: A very good WWI movie about the massive underground operations taking place (tunneling).
9th Company: Basically the Russian version of Platoon/Apocalypse now, except taking place in Afghanistan. It is in Russian, but subtitled. The extra “cool factor” this movie has is the vehicles, it’s nice to see ACTUAL Russian tanks and planes rather than gussied up US vehicles pretending to be Russians.

Kikujiro, just watch it.
Battle Royale - Its like Hunger Games if Hunger Games was any damn good.
Il Mare (The Lake House ripped this off (Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock?)
Infernal (or Internal) Affairs - What the Departed ripped off.
That’s a good start, me thinks.

Ah, damn... Then I should have recommended (Juon/ Ju-on) What The Grudge messed up in the US.

I recommend you watch this movie called Shutter. It’s along the same lines of the Grudge. It’s PG-13 but a veeeery rough one.

The American remake or the Thai original?

Have you seen the original Pulse movie? I typically prefer the American remakes of J horror because we have better actors and production values but Pulse was a case of both the American version being awful and the Japanese version scaring the absolute shit out of me.

The Sand Pebbles
It’s my favorite McQueen film. In fact it might be may favorite film outright. Sad that outside of film geek circles it is not that well known.

Never knew there was a Thai original. Americans can’t think of anything new can we? Well I can vouch for the American one and it is good.

Bubba Ho-Tep. Elvis, JFK and a mummy.

I’ll probably watch the Thai one if either. I am pretty convinced the last year for a GREAT movie from America was 1999, and what a great year! Office Space, Fight Club, The Matrix...
But yeah, its sad when we rip off other countries movies because we miss the hear of what made the originals so great some how (Like the Lakehouse vs Il Mare) and we get an OK movie. Now, if only it were easier to watch find the original foreign greats in theatres.
